We knew he had a heart condition but the true extent of the severity wasn't known until he was born. It was then we were told it was the worse.Born with essentially "half a heart", my boy had a whole lot of fight in him.
We spent the first 7 weeks in hospital; 2 open heart surgeries, 5 weeks on intensive care; but we had 13 wonderful, amazing, weeks at home.
His death was sudden and unexpected and when I think about it, I am watching the day like a video - except I can't pause it before the worse bit.
Everything is still as fresh and raw as if it was yesterday but the pain of living with his loss is easier to handle now.
Charlie died on Thursday 1st October 2009. He went into sudden cardiac failure at approximately 9.30 am and despite CPR by myself, the paramedics and A&E staff; we asked for him to be placed in my arms when then extubated him.
The time was 10.50am.
